Ecological Restoration

ESC ecological restoration projects are based on careful analysis of restoration priorities, constraints, and opportunities. Our site analyses include descriptions of vegetation, soil, geology, drainage patterns, and endangered species habitat.

Native Landscaping

ESC specializes in using local native plant communities as a model for landscape designs and installations. Upon analyzing the environmental attributes of a site, we then create a list of plants well suited to the various niches.

Ornamental Ponds

David Mahler, co-founder of ESC, has designed and overseen construction of over 40 ornamental ponds since 1977. Using local rock, native fish, and native plants that keep reinforced concrete linings completely concealed, our ponds are artistic interpretations of natural watercourses.

Rock Work

ESC designs and builds steps, terraces, walkways, and patios by placing boulders and flagstone without using mortar. Finished rockwork is permanent, unique, maintenance free, and complements the character of the surrounding land and architecture.

Trails

With safety, erosion control, and low maintenance in mind, ESC designs and builds trails to access key locations and accommodate the widest possible range of visitors without disturbing wildlife habitat. Our trails are often built with limestone and cedar logs for a more natural experience.

Water Quality

Environmental Survey Consulting uses native, locally harvested plants to vegetate and complete wet ponds and other stormwater quality facilities. Since 1989, we have planted over 100 wetlands that meet regulatory requirements, including 15 directly for the City of Austin. We offer design, installation, and maintenance services.
